I am truly honoured to be nominated for this award by Black Women in Arts. In fact given the status this lady Nina Simone 21-02-1933 - 21-04-2003 has not only throughout the music world, but in my own personal hall of fame, I actually wept, when i heard, as any award in this lady’s name is just huge!. Let me tell you a bit about her if you don’t know already...

Nina Simone born Eunice Kathleen Waymon February 21st, 1933  and is affectionately known as ‘The Priestess of Soul’, but the Jazz community also hold Nina in equal high regard. In fact, she is revered like few others. Perhaps Sarah Vaughan. Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald share her glory in that specific hall of fame.

Nina recorded over 60 albums! a record not easily matched. Any award in this lady’s name has to carry with it a level of prestige that cannot be easily discarded. Any award attaching their name to this lady have to understand exactly what they are doing.  Nina Simone may well be referred to as ‘The Priestess  of Soul’, but amongst the Jazz community her reputation is colossal.

As you may imagine given my name, and my deep voice, I am frequently asked if I am related to Nina, and on one occasion, when I arrived on the Isle of Wight in 2006 to perform at a very prestigious ball, the press got it into their heads that I was her daughter. My agent at the time thought it would be a good idea to not to deny it.  Well, I felt differently, albeit slightly amusing,  I understood that there are some involved in the music industry who completely fail to grasp the sheer value to music her name brings forward. As I said, I thought the situation was quite amusing, but, I was not worried about being associated with her, but concerned that this great lady’s name was being misused, which I could never endorse.

After Nina was rejected after trying to get onto the Curtis Institute of Music classical music programme, Nina according to reports, felt that this was because she was black.  Her family moved to Philadelphia and she gave piano lessons to get by.  She soon realised that some of the people she taught to play the piano were making more money that she was. Nina tried to do the same and started playing in a bar in Atlantic City. Nina was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon , but used the name Nina Simone as her mother did not approve of her playing in an alcohol establishment.

Nina Simone lost her home to the IRS and eventually moved to Barbados and then on to Liberia.  She then moved to Switzerland to ensure her daughter had a good education. Nina sadly tried to commit suicide, which thankfully failed, and found considerable fame in 1985 when Chanel used her recording of “my baby just cares for me” for a commercial.  That song then became a huge hit in Europe

Nina did have her problems with the law. As a feisty woman, Nina got in trouble for shooting at her noisy neighbours and leaving the scene of a traffic accident, after counseling she wrote her famous biography.
